As of April 2, 2025, travellers from visa-exempt countries, including the EU, must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the United Kingdom.
This new entry requirement applies even for short trips, including business, tourism, studies, or transit.
What Is the ETA?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation is a digital document linked to your biometric passport that permits entry into the UK for short stays. It is not a visa, making it a faster and simplified process for eligible travellers.
Key Facts:
- Mandatory from: April 2, 2025
- Validity: 2 years or until your passport expires
- Maximum stay per visit: 6 months
- Fee: £16 (approx. €19)

Who Needs It?
The ETA is required for:
- Nationals of countries that do not need a visa for the UK (e.g., EU, EEA countries, and others).
- Those traveling to the UK for tourism, short-term study, certain business activities, or transit through a UK airport or land border.
Exemptions:
- Frecnh’s school pupils under 18 participating in organized school trips are exempt from the ETA requirement. However, they must carry:
- A signed parental authorization
- A copy of the parents’ ID
- A valid passport or ID card
How to Apply for an ETA
You can apply through the UK ETA app or online via the official UK government website:
Required Documents:
- A valid biometric passport
- A recent high-quality digital photo
- A valid email address
- A working electronic payment method
⚠️ Important: Be cautious of unofficial websites charging inflated fees. The correct fee is £16, and the official site will be in English and end in “. gov.uk”.
